Why does Marbella attract investment?
Several factors make Marbella attractive to investors both large and small. Principal amongst these factors are:
Position
Marbella is situated at the heart of the Costa del Sol, in the Andalusian province of Málaga, on Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast.
Climate
Uniquely for the region and a large part of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, Marbella has its own microclimate, thanks to its position between the Sierra Blanca and the Mediterranean, and the proximity of the Straits of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean.
Ambiance
As a tourist destination, Marbella has been developed by entrepreneurs and members of the Spanish and European nobility since the 1950s, with elegance, taste and refinement, which distinguishes it from the surrounding resorts which have been geared towards the mass market.
With its luxury residential areas replete with exotic gardens, its marinas, its numerous golf courses, its luxury boutiques, its restaurants, clubs and discotheques of international standing, Marbella sees itself as both unique and special.
Despite this, Marbella still manages to maintain its traditional face in the old quarter of the city, with its narrow streets full of flowers, its gardens, its bull-ring and its “chiringuitos” or beach restaurants.
The property market
Its situation, climate and ambiance have made it very attractive to large Spanish and International property companies, and this has led to the provision of a wide range of all types of residence (apartments, terraced houses, semi-detached and detached villas, built to a high, very high or luxurious standard).
Investors
In the 80s there was an influx of large Arab investors, principally from Saudi Arabia. King Fahd financed the construction of a huge palace and a mosque, and brought his fabulous yacht, together with great glamour, to the city.
The attraction of seeing Arab and European nobility and the most important entrepreneurs and actors in the world, acted as a magnet for small, medium and large investors from all over the globe. As a consequence, for many decades the Spanish municipality with the greatest foreign investment has been Marbella.
Today, there is a great variety of investor, from purchasers of large mansions to purchasers of smaller apartments. Whether they come to stay for the summer or are permanent residents, they are attracted by the numerous golf courses and the marvellous climate.
Apart from the Spanish, of great importance is the presence of both other Europeans, such as the British, Russians, Germans, French and Italians, etc, and people from elsewhere, in particular the Arab world. It has been calculated that 30% of the residents of Marbella are foreigners.
